Apex energy ammo no longer comes from boxes you loot or stacks you carry. In Season 30, energy weapons regenerate their own ammo while idle. This applies in Battle Royale, Mixtape and Wildcard, leaving more backpack space for heals, grenades or your other weapon's ammo. Respawn's Marked Designer's Notes explain the change.

Apex Legends Season 30 energy ammo rework

Why Infinite Ammo matters for energy weapons

Automatic regeneration still leaves you with a limited stockpile. Infinite Ammo removes the recharge wait, according to Season 30 player reports. That makes it especially useful for energy guns in long fights: you can keep using your preferred gun after its normal reserve would have run out. Players describe the energy-weapon interaction here.

The tradeoff is two locked inventory slots. Amps are available in Ranked and Unranked Battle Royale, as described in Respawn's Showdown patch notes.

Prioritize it if running out of energy ammo keeps stopping your fights. The usual advice to watch your reserve matters much less with this Amp equipped.

Unlimited ammo does not mean a bigger magazine, no reloads, no overheating or extra damage. You still choose a weapon for how it handles; the Amp addresses its ammunition supply.

Energy weapon stockpiles and recharge times

By default, an energy gun regenerates one magazine-equivalent over 18 seconds. Shooting or reloading that gun pauses regeneration. Its stockpile limit depends on the weapon:

WeaponStockpile in magazine-equivalents
HAVOC, Nemesis, Devotion3
L-STAR4
Volt, RE-45, Triple Take2

These are stockpile units, not literal reloads for the L-STAR. Wildcard adds one magazine-equivalent and uses a 12-second cycle. Those special values are published for Wildcard specifically. You can display ammo as a percentage or bullet count in the HUD settings. Respawn's Marked patch notes give the capacities and timing.

Magazine upgrades change your reserve, too

Larger magazines increase stockpile capacity and ammo recovered per cycle without extending the interval. For the Volt, a base magazine means a 40-round stockpile and 20 rounds recovered per cycle; purple raises those to 54 and 27. Overflowing Magazine adds capacity beyond purple at the cost of slower reloads. Only one Corrupted Attachment fits each gun. Marked's magazine and attachment rules cover these changes.

A standard magazine upgrade is an easy priority. Overflowing is worth considering if you often need a few more shots to finish a knock, but the slower reload can leave you exposed when the next opponent arrives.

Loadout choices for the new ammo rules

Try a pairing that covers the way you use your energy gun:

  • Nemesis or HAVOC with a shotgun: a straightforward energy-AR loadout with a close-range partner. The shotgun gives you another option without depending on the energy gun's stockpile.
  • Volt with a familiar conventional-ammo rifle: worth trying if your Volt often runs dry. The rifle gives you a separate ammo supply and a weapon you can comfortably use beyond the Volt's usual role. Keep backpack ammo for that rifle.
  • Two energy weapons with Infinite Ammo in BR: worth considering if you enjoy both guns but their ammo supply puts you off. Choose weapons for different distances, such as a Nemesis and Volt. The Amp addresses the shared ammo concern; the pairing still needs to suit your aim and preferred fights.
